Is Max the same as HBO Max? ›

The Streaming Home of HBO. There's a change coming soon: the introduction of Max. Max is the enhanced service replacing HBO Max. The service will feature iconic programming, including all the HBO content you already love, like Game of Thrones.

You are able to stream Max by renting or purchasing on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, and Vudu.

HBO Max subscribers

If you're a current HBO Max subscriber, you won't need to sign up for Max. The HBO Max app will either automatically update to Max, or when you open HBO Max, you'll be prompted to download the Max app. That's it—happy streaming!

You may already have free Max through Samsung TV, Roku, Verizon Fios, DirecTV and other cable or live TV streaming platforms. Not sure? Click here to find out if you already have access to Max. Otherwise, you can score a free trail to Max through platforms such as DirectTV Stream.

If You Subscribed to HBO Max

All HBO Max subscribers have access to Max — we've transferred your profiles, watch history, and billing info. Your HBO Max app may have automatically updated to Max already. If not, when you open the HBO Max app, you'll be prompted to download the Max app.

Amazon Prime members can add Max to Prime Video Channels. To subscribe through Amazon Prime, go to amazon.com/channels/max. When you sign up, you can choose the Ad-Free or With Ads monthly plan. Once you add Max, you can stream all of Max using the Prime Video app.

Max: You can binge some of the most talked-about HBO favorites on the Hulu app and access additional shows, movies, and Max Originals on the Max app with our Max Add-on.

Current HBO Max subscribers have access to Max. On devices where you have HBO Max installed, go to the app store on your device, search for Max, and choose the download option. Once you've installed Max, you can delete the HBO Max app. If you need help updating to Max, go to Update HBO Max to Max.

Is Max free with AT&T? ›

AT&T Unlimited Elite is the only AT&T Wireless plan to include Max (formerly HBO Max). Some AT&T Internet subscribers may also have Max through their Internet plan, but that is also no longer offered. AT&T Unlimited Premium and AT&T Unlimited Premium PL do not include access to Max.

If you pay for HBO through a cable provider like Spectrum/Charter, Xfinity or DirectTV, you already have access to the ad-free version of Max as part of your subscription. To access the service simply download the Max app on a supported device and sign in through your TV provider to start streaming.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced HBO Max would become Max, to reflect that they'll be combining HBO Max with content from the Discovery+ platform. In essence, Max is just HBO Max in blue with even more content.

As we said earlier, Max has a deep back catalog and upcoming exclusives won't be available to stream anywhere else. In our mind, that makes a Max subscription more than worth it. Even at the higher $19.99 tier, the monthly price is cheaper than a movie ticket to see the new releases in theaters.

Though Max includes a lot of the content that you can find on Discovery Plus, the two platforms remain available as separate services. If you're a Discovery Plus member, you can keep your Discovery Plus membership with no additional fees. And viewers can still sign up for Discovery Plus on its own.

How is Max different from HBO Max? Max brings all the programming that you love from HBO Max together with favorites from Discovery TV brands: HGTV, the Food Network, TLC, Magnolia Network, and more – all for the same great price.

Max is home to content that used to require two subscriptions to view: HBO Max and Discovery Plus. The library includes a huge catalog pulled from all of Warner Bros. Discovery's various brands, including HBO, Warner Bros. Studios, Discovery Channel, DC, Cartoon Network, Looney Tunes, and more.

Warner Bros wanted a name that was more family friendly, had less of HBO's male audience skew, and was perhaps less likely to lead to the churn HBO faced with people joining for specific shows and leaving. The other justification was the expansion of HBO Max content with the addition of Discovery's library.
